  • Acidic Soil Loving Plants of the Appalachian Mountain Areas
    2026/02/01

In Episode #54 of Season #4, I will discuss some acid loving plants. Specifically, acidic soil loving plants such as Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and White Pine trees.

Plants such as these grow in and around the Appalachian Mountains, the Appalachian Foothills to the mountains and some call it the Appalachian Plateau.

One of my hobbies is to hike and near me is the Red River Gorge Geological Area. I love hiking in this area but I do a tiny bit of hiking in Georgia, Berea, KY, and in the Smoky Mountains. You will see these plants in many of these areas if there is an acidic soil to sustain the plants.

Your host is Tommy Fowler. I have a biology degree from the University of Kentucky and a high passion for the outdoors. I am "The Amateur Naturalist".

    We will talk about:

    • In tonight's episode, I will discuss rhododendron, mountain laurel, and white pine trees.
    • I will talk about why the soil is probably acidic.

  • Dire Wolves Died Out ... Are They Now Back From Extinction?

In Episode #53 of Season #4, I will discuss the company Colossal Biosciences and it's attempt at bringing back an animal, the Dire Wolf, from it's 10,000 year extinction. The Dire Wolf DNA is not 100% Dire Wolf DNA but it has some Gray Wolf DNA segments to make the DNA complete. Because of this, many people are upset that they are saying that they brought back the Dire Wolf. But this is just the first attempt at bringing back a previously extinct animal. No one anticipates ever seeing a Dire Wolf running wild.

Your host is Tommy Fowler. I have a biology degree from the University of Kentucky and a high passion for the outdoors. I am "The Amateur Naturalist".

    We will talk about:

    • In tonight's episode, I will discuss the company Colossal Biosciences but very briefly.
    • I will also mention that the same company has plans on bringing back the Woolly Mammoth in the next 2-4 years.
    • I will mention the creation of the Woolly Mouse and why it was created.
    • I also mention that there are other animals potentially on the horizon of bringing back from extinction.

  • Whitetail Deer Communication Through Scent Glands

In Episode #52 of Season #4, I will discuss the Whitetail Deer and their use of glandular scents for communication between deer.

Your host is Tommy Fowler. I have a biology degree from the University of Kentucky and a high passion for the outdoors. I am "The Amateur Naturalist".

    We will talk about:

    • In tonight's episode I will discuss the 7 glands of whitetail deer and the glands basic uses.
    • I will discuss a bit about the last 100+ years of Kentucky restoring the whitetail deer to the populations that we see today.
    • This is not a podcast about hunting. I used to live and breathe hunting but I never go any longer although I greatly miss being in the outdoors as much as I used to go. I never found anyone who spend the hours in the cold, the rain, the thunderstorms, the below zero temperatures all day because of my sheer love of the deer and the outdoors.
    • I will briefly discuss deer rubs and scrapes, but just briefly today. I want to come back and do another episode at a later date on these topics.
