Where did alchemy begin? Episode 1 of THE GREAT WORK, a documentary on the history of alchemy, starts in ancient Egypt, the Black Land of Kemet. It covers Alexandria, Mary the Jewess, Zosimos, Hermes Trismegistus and the Emerald Tablet.

We visit the workshops of Egyptian metalworkers and dyers. We follow the art to Alexandria in Roman Egypt, where Greek philosophy met the furnace. There we meet the first alchemists whose names survive: Mary the Jewess, whose inventions are still used in laboratories, and Zosimos of Panopolis, who recorded his strange visions of transformation. The episode ends with Hermes Trismegistus, the "Thrice-Great", and the Emerald Tablet: "as above, so below".

THE GREAT WORK is a documentary series on the history of alchemy, from the black soil of ancient Egypt to the depth psychology of Carl Jung.

In “The Ensouled Violin,” gifted but obscure violinist Franz Stenio becomes consumed by jealousy after hearing the seemingly supernatural genius of Paganini. Convinced that his rival’s power comes from a violin strung with the remains of someone who loved him, Franz vows never to play again until he can obtain such strings himself. His devoted teacher, Samuel Klaus, sacrifices his own life so that Franz may transform his Stradivarius into an instrument possessing a human voice. Armed with its unearthly music, Franz publicly challenges Paganini and initially entrances the audience with a performance surpassing even the master’s. But during the finale, Klaus’s imprisoned spirit speaks through the violin and appears around his ungrateful pupil as the bewitched strings violently break. The terrified audience flees, leaving Franz dead upon the stage—destroyed by the ambition and vanity. In “From the Polar Lands,” Dr. Erkler recalls an extraordinary encounter during an 1878 expedition stranded for the winter on the frozen coast of Spitsbergen. Isolated beneath the endless polar night, with their ships trapped in ice and provisions running dangerously low, the explorers are astonished when fifty seal hunters emerge from the snowy wilderness beneath the Aurora Borealis. Their guide is Old Johan, a white-haired mariner who inexplicably knew the precise location of the hidden camp. The hunters reveal that Johan has been known to generations of their fathers and grandfathers, always appearing exactly as he does now and earning the name “the white-haired all-knower.” When questioned about his age and mysterious knowledge, Johan simply answers that he has never counted his years and knew the explorers were there because God guided him, leaving Erkler with an encounter that neither science nor reason can explain.
