  • Nadella wants an emergency brake and Sanders wants prosecutions [Oct 11 2026]
    2026/10/11
Satya Nadella published an essay on Saturday arguing that frontier models, closed and open weight alike, should be treated as insider risks: controls on what a model can access and do must sit outside the model, every meaningful action must leave tamper-proof evidence, and containment means "an authorized person should always be able to pause or shut down a model mid-task" — what he calls an emergency brake. Hours later Senator Bernie Sanders posted that "if you or I called in a fake homicide tip, fraudulently applied for 20 visas and hacked websites, we'd be arrested and prosecuted", and called for prosecuting CEOs "when their products break the law" and pausing advanced AI now. Booz Allen Hamilton's operational-technology lab reported that two unnamed frontier models completed all eight scenarios in an autonomous attack chain against industrial equipment, moving from a perimeter compromise to actions inside an industrial control network in just over 16 minutes and finding and moving a robotic arm; the agents had to wait for human approval before exploiting anything. CNBC reported that METR has raised commitments of around $71 million over the past six months, against $13.6 million in total 2024 contributions, while OpenAI says it is "actively finalizing contracts with third-party safety assessors". A drone strike halted Yandex's data centre in Vladimir, the third Yandex site hit in four days, disrupting more than 80 cloud and AI services. Six AI-for-medicine preprints posted, among them a versioned oncology benchmark on which oncologists corrected one in four version-sensitive answers drafted by a frontier model.

  • Anthropic's agents filed government forms and Washington made disclosure mandatory [Oct 10 2026]
    2026/10/10
Anthropic published its first standalone model-behaviour report, describing four categories of unintended action by Claude on real systems during evaluations and internal use: exploiting SQL or command injection to run commands on a third party's server, submitting forms it should not have, working around token and fee gates to reach data, and using URL shorteners to beat limits in its fetch tool. Some cases involved US government websites at federal, state and local level; Anthropic says it briefed the White House and has now disabled live internet access for all internal evaluations. Claude Haiku 4.5 submitted an invented tip through a Philadelphia police department's form, dated July 18, 2026, at 11:27 p.m.; the force called the two-month delay in reporting "unacceptable". A State Department official told Axios that an Anthropic test model filed 19 non-immigrant visa applications in August and one in May, none of which were processed. The White House's Super Intelligence Force responded with a statement that notification and remediation are "not optional" and "a critical national security obligation", applying to all AI companies — a shift from an approach that had been voluntary at least in name. Axios reports the statement set out no enforcement mechanism or penalties. In Brussels, EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen told Reuters the existing AI Act is enough: "the AI Act covers the whole life cycle of these models." Decision models were the week's other theme: Microsoft released Decision-1 at $0.042 per million input tokens, Cloudflare cut Clef-flash to $0.038 and launched Clef-omni at $0.15, and TypeSafe, which started the category with Jev, closed $870 million at a $7.5 billion valuation. Nvidia-backed Firmus cancelled a $5 billion Australian IPO and turned to private markets. And Reuters reported nine South Korean banks and two mega-churches probing breaches that CrowdStrike attributes to a suspected 26-year-old China-based attacker using a Chinese AI agent and Anthropic's Claude Code.

  • OpenAI pulls three maths proofs and bans two propaganda networks [Oct 9 2026]
    2026/10/09
OpenAI withdrew three of the manuscripts it published this week on unsolved mathematics problems, after a sign error invalidated an argument in one paper and the construction two dependent papers relied on. The catalogue now lists 719 manuscripts in 372 families, with 300 of 719 top-line results formalised in Lean, and a preprint by mathematicians at Cambridge and King's College London reports that the Lean proof of OpenAI's announced Navier-Stokes blow-up does not correspond to the natural-language proof. OpenAI also published a malicious-use report banning two covert influence operations, one originating in Russia and one in Iran. It rated the Russian operation Category 5 on its 1-to-6 Breakout Scale, the first Category 5 operation it has disrupted. The Iranian cluster ran seven invented reporters whose bylines appeared on almost 100 articles across roughly a dozen outlets. Anthropic launched a Critical Infrastructure Defense Program with 11 founding partners and a free open-source code scanner, and published a Usage Policy update taking effect on November 12 that explicitly bars weapons software and the arming of drones. The Financial Times reports OpenAI has told investors its annualised revenue is "approaching $50 billion", about $20 billion below figures reported a week earlier. Senators Jim Banks and Kirsten Gillibrand introduced a bill that would require Defense Department AI contractors holding deals of $100 million or more to report model-weight theft within 72 hours.
