  • Vidyarambham
    2026/10/19

Why do we teach a child to write their first letters on a plate of rice? And why is a mantra sometimes written on the tongue before the child begins to learn?

In this episode of Chaturya, I explore the meaning and significance of Vidyarambham, the sacred Hindu rite that marks a child's first step into learning. I also share a personal story from my childhood: how my parents travelled through heavy rain and waited through the night to perform my Vidyarambham on VIjayadashami at the Sri Mookambika Temple in Kollur, Karnataka.

We explore the spiritual meaning of *akshara*, the symbolism of rice, the invocation of Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesha, and the traditions associated with Vijayadashami and Navaratri.

But Vidyarambham is not confined to South India. Across Bharat, the first initiation into learning is celebrated through regional traditions such as Aksharabhyasam, Ezhuthiniruthu and Hate Khori. Discover how these practices differ, what connects them, and why the beginning of education has long held a sacred place in Indian culture.

    **IN THIS EPISODE**
    • What is Vidyarambham, and why is it performed?
    • The meaning of Akshara and its spiritual significance

  • Why did Krishna steal butter despite being a God?
    2026/09/04

Why does Krishna steal butter? And why has the mischievous Makhan Chor become one of the most beloved images associated with Krishna Janmashtami? In this episode of Chaturya, K. Hari Kumar explores the story behind Krishna's butter theft, from the homes of the gopis in Gokul to the famous leela of Damodara, when Yashoda attempts to bind Krishna with a rope.

But beneath the childhood mischief lies a deeper spiritual meaning. We explore why butter can represent the purified heart, what Krishna's theft tells us about bhakti and divine love, and how the same ancient story lives on through Dahi Handi, Mosaru Kudike, Uriyadi and the butter offerings made to Unnikrishna at Guruvayur. This is the story of a theft that may never have been about taking anything at all, but about the Divine receiving what love had already prepared.

  • Why the Ekambareswarar Shiva Lingam Has Never Been Bathed in Water or Oil
    2026/06/23

Parvati's EmbraceIn the ancient temple of Ekambareswarar in Kanchipuram, lies a Shiva Lingam unlike any other in India.

Made entirely of sand, this sacred lingam has never once been bathed in water or oil, the usual abhishekam rituals performed in every other Shiva temple.

    Why?

Because of a story that goes back to Goddess Parvati herself.

This episode tells the story of Shiva's test of Parvati's devotion, and how Parvati embraced the sand lingam she had built under the ancient mango tree, refusing to let it dissolve. Even today, devotees say the lingam still bears the marks of her embrace.

We also look at the architecture of the Ekambareswarar Temple, one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams representing the element of Earth (Prithvi), and why this temple holds such a unique place in Shaiva tradition.🔔
