Montana Max digs into the true story of two rodeo legends who came out of Big Sky Country and changed the sport forever. Fanny Sperry Steele rode slick when everyone else took shortcuts. Alice Greenough Orr won four world titles and invented barrel racing when the arena tried to shut women out. This is Montana history worth knowing.

  • The Strange Montana You Never Knew
    2026/04/21

You think you know Montana. Big skies. Trout streams. The occasional moose making questionable decisions in traffic. Fair enough. But there's another Montana out there — and most people drive right past it.

In this episode, Montana Max takes you on a tour of the landmarks that don't make it onto the postcard racks. A fifteen-foot fiberglass cow named Stoney who has survived thirty-two bullet holes, a full restoration, and canonical inclusion in a post-apocalyptic video game. A nearly four-thousand-pound Prohibition-era steer who toured forty-two states and fueled up on bootleg whiskey mash. A twenty-seven-foot concrete penguin in a town that is, geographically speaking, closer to polar bear territory. Boulders that ring like bells when you hit them — one of only seven such formations on earth. An underground city in Havre built by businessmen who refused to stop working after a fire burned their town to the ground. A garden of one thousand Buddhas on the Flathead Indian Reservation. A toxic lake in Butte that killed ten thousand snow geese and is now hosting breakthrough medical research.

Strange? Yes. But also completely, authentically, stubbornly Montana.

Max has been walking this state for longer than most people have been alive. He has opinions. He has stories. He once tried to hum along with the Ringing Rocks and was asked to stop by a geological surveyor. He considers that a compliment.

This is The 406 Life. Pull over. Listen in.
