  • 174. Is it Better to be Kind or Nice?
    2026/04/20

When we are "Nice" to people might we being doing them a disservice? When we encounter a situation where the opportunity arises to be kind, do we sometimes take the easy road and are nice in a situation because it is easier for us?

Are "Nice" and "Kind" interchangeable? On the surface they appear to be, but being nice to someone may be the easy path for us. Being kind is not always easy, and it may be demonstrated through tough love.

Being kind is intrinsic, and represents what we are, where being nice is primarily an extrinsic, surface-level behavior focused on being pleasant, polite, and agreeable to avoid conflict or gain social approval.

Tim and Amy apply this to the phrase "Minnesota Nice" — are we fooling a lot of people by not being as kind as the phrase might suggest.

And has another T-shirt idea been found?

Thank you for all the support we've been receiving from you, the listeners! We really appreciate it as our podcast continues to grow. As always, if there is a topic you'd like us to tackle let us know.

  • 148. The Importance of Relationships
    2026/04/13

In a return engagement, D2 joins Tim in discussing Year 4 at the Minnesota State Fair. Between interruptions from her S1, Lindsey and Tim discuss the importance of getting to know those around you, and the benefits positive relations bring.

Tim shares what he has learned in four years to help maintain his sanity while working 12 long days at the fair - at the end of the day, it's only root beer and soda - it's not life and death. (Like being a respiratory therapist!)

As well the discussion delves into the collapse of the classics at the fair and the rise of new popular foods.

  • 172. T-Shirts and Old Men, is Tim the Old Man in the Neighborhood?
    2026/04/07

In this episode, Tim and Amy spitball of offering "That's Not What Mom Said" t-shirts. The themes include "Friday on Tap", "Fresh Tapped Fridays", "Beer and Banter" and possibly a complimentary line of "Tim's Tidbits" capturing some of his wisdom (that sounds a lot better than stupid rantings!)

Let us know what other ideas we might include on our t-shirts.

The conversation then turns to the old man in the neighborhood. We've all encountered this gentlemen, perhaps repeatedly as the mantle is passed on. It's that man you wave to as you drive by and perhaps even strike up a conversation. He's the seasoned veteran of life that may impart some of his knowledge, sometimes unsolicited, in an attempt to help others.

They discuss how these gentlemen often fade from our notice, passing on without much fanfare.

What's your experience with "The Old Man in the Neighborhood?"

  • 171. Being a Minnesotan, The Land of How Many Lakes?
    2026/03/30

Everyone knows that Minnesota is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes."

But how many lakes are there really, why does Amy have the actual number committed to memory?

Amy also discovered that she might have a guard cat, and a laser-point chasing dog. (Things always seem to get mixed up at her house!)

Listen as Tim goes through a list of 20 things most Minnesotans tend to do, and then adds a few more to the list.

And who has an accent? Surely not anyone from Minnesota, don't cha know.

We really appreciate all the support we're getting. Thanks to you, our podcast continues to grow! If there's any topic you'd like us to tackle, just send us an email at Thatsnotwhatmomsaid@gmail.com

  • 170. Lindsey Crashes the Podcast!
    2026/03/16

After several recent guest host appearances, Lindsey joins Amy and Tim as the conversation, once again, uses AI to ask thought-provoking questions providing little insight as to what makes us tick.

If you had a theme song for your life what would it be?

When do you feel most like yourself?

What little things make your day?

Amid the chaos that sisters bring to the discussion, see if Tim can maintain any semblance of control.

This episode was very challenging to edit with three speakers and only two microphones, of course it included multiple interruptions from kids and dogs to add to the chaos.

Thanks for listening. Please share, like, comment and subscribe wherever you listen to our show. We really appreciate your support.

  • 169. Party Buses, Curling in AZ and Being a Good Teammate!
    2026/03/09

What is the proper etiquette for party buses? Is it anything goes? How does one give themselves a black eye partying on a bus?

So many questions, as Amy describes the celebration of her birthday weekend — how old are you, Amy?

Tim fills us in on his trip to Arizona where he took part in a curling Bonspiel. (Who knew there was curling in AZ?)

Listen as Tim describes the no-win situation they found themselves facing.

Finally, is it better to be a best player in a losing effort by your team or to play poorly as the team takes the victory. With some input from AI, Amy and Tim look at this from both sides of the equation.

    2026/03/02

Is a lamp a lamp if it doesn't provide any light?

Find out what Amy added to her stairway, and does it really make any sense?

Tim tells us about some of the unique experiences from this years annual trip Cabo San Lucas - rain and mosquitos? No way!?

What is the reason to put together a puzzle, especially if you take apart and put it back in the box upon immediately completing it?
