What does it truly mean to follow Jesus -- not just be around him, but actually surrender to him? In John 13, we find ourselves in one of the most charged and intimate moments in all of Scripture: the final meal Jesus shares with his disciples before the cross. Within that single evening, we witness betrayal, bold promises, and quiet failure -- and somehow, all of it points us toward a clearer picture of what genuine discipleship looks like. The contrast between Judas, who walked out into the night despite having been so close to the light, and Peter, who was confident in his own strength right up until the moment he crumbled, forces us to ask a hard question about ourselves. Are we truly surrendered, or are we simply nearby? The passage gives us three marks of a true disciple: a heart fully given over to Christ, a faith that leans on his strength rather than our own, and a love for others that reflects his sacrificial love back into the world. These are not abstract ideals -- they are daily, practical choices that shape how we treat the people around us, how we respond when life gets hard, and whether others can actually see Jesus in us.
