Ten Yugoslav Lloyd steamers volunteered to Britain before Yugoslavia fought
In this episode, we follow Ivan "Vane" Ivanović from his Olympic refusal in Berlin to the boardrooms of Yugoslav Lloyd, tracing the choices that led him to place ten steamers at Britain's disposal before Yugoslavia entered the war. What compelled a neutral nation's shipowner to commit nearly half his fleet to a foreign war?
Person: Ivan Stefan Ivanović (Vane)
Date: 1940 autumn
Location: operations of Yugoslav Lloyd, Britain and Mediterranean/Atlantic routes
Event: ten Yugoslav Lloyd steamers volunteered to Britain's Ministry of War Transport
Background: Vane appointed director of Yugoslav Lloyd in 1937
- Vane set a national 400m hurdles record at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and refused to perform the Nazi salute.
- Born in Osijek in 1913, he was raised between Yugoslavia and London and educated at Westminster and Peterhouse, Cambridge.
- His stepfather, Božo Banac, owned Yugoslav Lloyd and made Vane director in 1937, giving him operational control before WWII.
- In autumn 1940, while Yugoslavia remained officially neutral, Vane placed ten of Yugoslav Lloyd’s twenty-two steamers at Britain’s disposal.
- Ten ships amounted to nearly half the fleet Božo had built, a material leverage Vane deliberately risked before any treaty obliged Belgrade.
