    It’s 1989, not long after the wall has fallen in Berlin, and local bar owner, Mark Ernestus, has just opened a new business in the city, a record store called Hard Wax. The store initially sells and trades vintage soul, funk, reggae, and hip-hop records, with a sign on its window stating; Hard Wax – Black Music – Buy and Sell. As attention in Berlin quickly shifts to the electronic music coming out of the Chicago house and Detroit techno scenes though, Hard Wax’s priorities incorporate importing such genres. The store quickly becomes positioned as a primary site for the techno revolution that is underway in Germany, with a community building around Hard Wax that includes the musician and studio engineer, Moritz von Oswald. Ernestus and von Oswald not only get to know each other, but also develop a creative relationship. From their collaboration manifests a new genre, dub techno, which through one of their aliases, Basic Channel, will in the 1990s blend elements of techno, ambient, and dub, into revolutionary sonic forms, such as “Phylyps Trak”.

    It’s the very early 2000s, and Adriana Lopez, a recent business administration university graduate in Bogota, Colombia, is feeling disillusioned about the new marketing job she has taken following her studies. As she is beginning this career in business though, Lopez is actively exploring the side of her life that is occupied with electronic music, which includes djing techno parties. Such is Lopez’s passion for these latter pursuits, that she will have soon quit her commitments in the business world, to instead prioritise her music endeavours. This new focus will, in the very near future, take her to Barcelona, Spain, a move which contributes to her developing a style of moody, driving techno, that in a decade or so will manifest in one of her earliest tracks, “Estructura”.

    Episode 38 –Joey Beltram - Energy Flash

    It’s the mid-1980s in Queens, New York, where teenage graffiti artist, Joey Beltram, regularly rides the local M-train. These journeys of his begin from the last stop on the line, near where he lives in Middle Village. As Beltram takes the train, he meets other graffiti artists, and through these acquaintances he becomes introduced not only to different aspects of graffiti art, but also to the street parties that occur in their neighbourhoods. It is at these street parties that Beltram encounters djs playing a mix of hip hop and new electronic music sounds, including house. So drawn is he to the djs at these events, that Beltram will soon shift his creative energies from graffitiing to making music, eventually leading to him producing one of techno’s most iconic tracks, "Energy Flash".
