What does it take to become a comic book artist, create an independent comic, and find your place in the comic book community?

What happens when a dad starts making comics for his kids… and that little project grows into an entire comic book community?

On this episode of Talkin' Comics Podcast, AJ sits down with Andy, a graphic designer and creative director from the UK who created The Beyond, a monthly subscription comic designed to bring stories, puzzles, creativity, and fun to kids.

Andy shares how his love of drawing began as a child, how characters like Diplodocus and Sea Lion eventually found their way into his comics, and how his experiences with the online comic community inspired him to build something bigger.

The Beyond brings together multiple creators, with writers and artists being paid for their work, while the comic reaches young readers through schools. Andy also explains how he's working to get comics into the hands of kids who might discover that reading can be fun when they find the right format.

What does it take to create an independent comic book from the ground up?

On this episode of Talkin' Comics Podcast, AJ Reimann sits down with actor, writer and comic book creator Donal Thoms-Cappello, creator of Powerscape, to talk about the journey from an idea that began years ago to a fully realized independent comic.

Powerscape is set in a future where humanity has rebuilt itself after catastrophic environmental collapse. A mysterious energy called CORE keeps cities alive, but that energy must be replenished. The solution? Cities compete in combat-based sporting events, with the outcome determining who receives the energy needed to survive.

Donal explains where the idea came from, how his background in acting and theater influenced his approach to comics, and how he eventually teamed up with artist Stefan Toshev.

We also get into one of the most important parts of making comics: collaboration.

Donal and AJ compare their own experiences working with artists and discuss why giving artists room to bring their own ideas to the page can make a comic much better than either creator could have imagined alone.

Donal is currently preparing a Kickstarter campaign for the Powerscape Volume One trade paperback, with the campaign expected to launch around mid-October according to the conversation.
