The fire hall stood tall with its big red doors shining in the sunlight, the Bark Mountain Fire Department was buzzing, today is recruitment day.

Young men and women from all around town gathered to try out for the chance to become the newest Bark Mountain Firefighter. Fire Chief Steve stood proudly at the front of the hall, with Goose the Fire Dog sitting beside him, tail wagging happily.

“We’re looking for our next firefighter,” Chief Steve announced. “Someone brave, hardworking, and someone who cares about others.”

As the crowd shifted, whispers floated through the room. One boy pushed ahead, bragging loudly and teasing others, trying to make himself look better. Jake noticed — and his stomach twisted.

Jake stood near the back of the line, his heart pounding.

That morning, his mom had smiled gently and said, “You can do this, Jake.” His dad added proudly, “We believe in you.” And his little brother hugged him tight. “No matter what happens today, you’re already my hero.”

Jake felt nervous… but he also knew one thing.

No matter what the bully did, he would be true to himself, stay honest and he would stay kind.
