I'm Nate Campbell and I teach Story Telling. My grandpa Tom was the best storyteller I've ever met and I discovered the framework he used to tell great stories. I'm writing a book called Telling Great Stories teaching this framework. This podcast is your daily lesson on story telling. One of my favorite stories is Fred Smith. He was the founder of FedEx. Fred Smith to pay his bills, and he tried to get a contract. He was up in maybe Chicago, trying to get a defense contract for FedEx. It was going to be a big deal, and they shot him down. He's at the airport, and he had $15,000, but he needed to pay something like $35,000 in payroll the following week. Instead of going back to Tennessee, he decided to hop on a flight to Vegas, hit the blackjack tables, and was able to make payroll because he gambled. He took the remainder of the money, gambled, and won. FedEx is still a thing because of that action that he took.Even before that when Fred Smith was in college he wrote a paper describing FedEx and he got a C or D. His professor said, "Good but it must be a realistic idea."He went into the military and went off to Vietnam. He started to notice how poorly the transportation of goods was. He noticed the systems and he never gave up on that thought or that idea. He kept reevaluating it in his mind. He started thinking, "This is not possible," and he kept going. He kept going and turned that into FedEx.One of the neat things about him at FedEx was that the workforce loved him. He ran it in a way that was pretty military-based but employees appreciated that and they would show up. They would work extra hours and sometimes without pay. It was their baby too. I think that a piece of that is the storytelling aspect, because you have to be able to tell a great story to really motivate people.Another great example is Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs started Apple Computer with his friend Steve Wozniak, Woz was really the brains behind Apple and built the Apple One against all odds. It sold really well.Steve Jobs has this daughter that he didn't really claim and he built this computer called the Lisa, which was her name. He was trying to sell it. When he was trying to sell it he just had all this techno babble. He had taken out a 5- or 6-page ad in the New York Times with all of the jargon about the computer, talking about how cool the Lisa was. Lisa didn't sell. They canned him. Yes, they fired him as CEO.The founder of the company gets fired, goes off, and he starts NEXT Computers but then also helps re-launch Pixar. When he was at Pixar that's really where his life changed, and he learned storytelling. Pixar is still today one of the greatest storytelling companies that there is. He then comes back to Apple, and that's when Apple changed. That's when the Think Different campaign started. His next New York Times ad was just Think Different, and he really identified with his customer. He is the ideal avatar of an Apple computer user: the artist. It's the reason why I have the "Crazy Ones" quote up on my wall. It's my identity as an entrepreneur. It's my identity as an Apple user. I'm a round peg in a square hole.As a kid we had an Apple computer as well, even though we weren't wealthy, just a middle-class family. For some reason, I'm not sure, my parents bought an Apple.I've always liked their computers, but more than anything, I've liked their marketing and their advertisements when Steve Jobs was behind the wheel.Where am I going with this? Don't give up, okay? There are times when it's going to get hard. There are times when you might tell a story, and it's going to bomb. If you're trying to write a book, it's going to get hard. There are going to be challenges that you face, and those challenges are good. You want challenges. You want more life that challenges you, because if it was easy, everybody would do it, and if it was easy, it would be boring. When you have a hard time, when you have a hard day, when you're stuck, just remember that there is tomorrow, that there is now, and that you can take action. You can do more than you really think that you can. Sometimes that means stepping away and taking a break, going on a walk, taking a nap, going to that birthday party, going and eating the cake, calling a friend. Sometimes spending time with friends and family is 1,000% the best thing that you can do. Other times, spending time alone, working on your thing. That's it. I encourage you this Thanksgiving, or I guess Halloween is coming up. This, Halloween. Say hi to somebody you don't know. Make someone's day. Make somebody smile. It's one of the easiest things that we can do: bring a smile to somebody's face. It's one of the least popular, most uncommon things that we do as well. This is how easy it is, guys.Yesterday, I went to the grocery store. On my walk into the grocery store, something that I've done for quite some time is, if I see trash, I just grab it and I throw it away. For whatever reason, grocery store ...
