The story does not open in a studio. It opens in Beni Makada, Tangier, with a man who worked with his hands. M’Hamed Libari was a technician of that quarter. He held a civic number — Member 083 of the Urban Commune of Tangier Association — and he left three poems. The family does not present those poems as decoration. They present them as dark deaths on paper: verses written by a man who knew the weight of a Moroccan city and the weight of being unpaid by history

He died on 8 June 2010. Estate record 108/231/247. National identity C.I.N. K 95540. The judgment his sons carry from the Tangier Primary Court of Family Justice is file 2016/1619-70, dated 6 June 2016. Those are the bones. The flesh of the story is what the living were told to do with them

They were told to wait. Wait for the lawyer. Wait for the clerk. Wait for a newspaper. Wait until the file ripened. Waiting is a polite word for a second death. The family says the case did not only bury a father. It wore the house down until the grief itself went numb — a psychological death delivered in offices that never called back

The mother did not leave the courthouse to that numbness. For nearly twenty years she held her ground on the father’s case in Moroccan courts. Twenty years of corridors, stamps, and men who spoke as if time were free. The sons name her endurance the way a book names a front line. The case did not move because the system was kind. It moved, when it moved, because she refused to sit down
