Tang-u is a short story written by Lawrence E. Adams, published in the February 1896 issue (Vol. I, No. 5) of The Black Cat magazine.

The story explains the history behind a unique painted portrait brought back from the Orient by an American naval officer named Marston.

The painting depicts a young Chinese boy, roughly 10 to 12 years old, dressed in the formal, jeweled uniform of a high-ranking Japanese naval officer. We are then transported back in time to WWI where a Japanese flagship is leaving Canton right after war is declared.

American officers acting as naval advisors rescue a young, drowning Chinese boy named Tang-u.

Because of Tang-U's exceptional, sharp eyesight, the young boy notices a critical threat that the ship's crew misses. Tang-u is able to warn the crew and save the entire flagship from an impending disaster.T

In honor of his extraordinary bravery and for saving the ship, the boy is given an honorary position and a full, decorated Japanese naval officer uniform—the very image captured in Marston's portrait.
