British Ghanaian rap icon Sway Dasafo, age 44, has died at his home in Ghana—his passing announced by the Mobo Awards. A trailblazer in U.K. hip-hop, he became the first unsigned artist to win a Mobo Award in 2005, rising on the strength of his raw, lyrical mixtapes. Known for his literary flair and commitment to nurturing new talent, Sway battled Hodgkin lymphoma in 2010 but went into remission. He leaves behind two sons and twin daughters—and an indelible legacy as a pioneer who proved British rap could dominate the mainstream.
