War, geopolitics and sustainable development are inseparable. In this Sustainably SAJe analysis, Dr. Shelley-Ann John examines how escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States creates environmental, social and economic consequences that extend far beyond the battlefield.

Using the Brundtland Commission’s intergenerational definition of sustainable development and Rachel Carson’s warnings about cascading ecological harm, the article explores war as a systemic sustainability regression. Airspace closures and longer aviation routes increase fuel consumption and carbon emissions, while damage to energy and transportation infrastructure risks lasting contamination of air, soil and water. At the same time, conflict disrupts medical and food supply chains, intensifies displacement, strains public institutions and places vulnerable populations at even greater risk.
