Welcome to Cyrus Says!
On this episode of Cyrus Says, sports journalist and author Suprita Das joins Cyrus Broacha to talk about her new book 'Women in Blue' and the incredible rise of Indian women’s cricket.
Suprita looks back at a time when women cricketers had to share equipment, arrange money for tours and play with almost no television coverage, sponsorship or public attention. She explains how pioneers like Diana Edulji, Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami helped build the foundation for the generation we know today.
The conversation moves through the major turning points for the sport, Harmanpreet Kaur’s iconic 171 in the 2017 World Cup, India reaching the 2020 final, the arrival of the Women’s Premier League, and finally India’s 2025 World Cup win that changed the visibility of the women’s game.
Suprita also talks about Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur, the young girls now entering cricket academies across India, and why women’s cricket should no longer have to be constantly compared with the men’s game.
And because this is Cyrus Says, there’s also a detour into Rahul Dravid’s famous MTV Bakra prank, which Suprita admits she was definitely not happy about, so enjoy!
