Welcome to Stronger Than the Shift!

If you’re married to a firefighter, first responder, or someone whose career means missed holidays, sleepless nights, solo parenting, and learning to carry more than you ever expected—you’ve found your people.

I’m your host, Emily, and each week I’ll sit down with firefighter spouses and other first responder partners for honest conversations about the realities of this life. Together we’ll talk about marriage, motherhood, mental health, identity, resilience, shift work, and everything in between.

This isn’t a podcast about having all the answers. It’s about creating a space where we can share our stories, laugh together, cry together, and remind one another that we’re never as alone as this life can sometimes make us feel.

Whether you’re brand new to the first responder world or you’ve been living this life for decades, my hope is that every episode leaves you feeling a little more understood, a little more encouraged, and a little stronger than the shift.

So grab your coffee, fold that load of laundry, head out on your walk, or listen on the drive to school pickup.

Welcome to the community. I’m so glad you’re here.

  • Episode 2: Life Between the Calls
    2026/07/24

What happens after the sirens fade?

In the very first guest episode of Stronger Than the Shift, Emily sits down with firewife Brandy to talk about the parts of first responder life that rarely make it into conversation. From the emotional weight of 48-hour shifts to the invisible mental load of managing a household alone, they share the honest realities of loving someone whose job is to answer everyone else’s emergencies.

    Together they discuss:

    • Becoming a firefighter family
    • The resentment and guilt that can quietly build
    • Learning to communicate through exhaustion and trauma
    • Raising children who look up to their firefighter dad
    • Why making plans feels almost impossible
    • Finding humor and strength in the chaos

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re the only one feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or stretched thin, this episode is a reminder that you’re not alone.

  • Episode 1: Meet Your Host | My Story, Our Journey, and Why I Started Stronger Than the Shift
    2026/07/16

Welcome to the very first episode of Stronger Than the Shift.

Before we dive into conversations with incredible firefighter and first responder spouses, I wanted to introduce myself and share the story behind this podcast.

In this episode, I’m taking you back to where it all began—from accidentally setting my husband up with someone else in college, to his journey into the fire service, becoming parents during COVID, navigating layoffs, postpartum anxiety, solo parenting, therapy, and ultimately finding purpose in one of the hardest seasons of my life.

This episode is an honest look at what life behind the scenes of the fire service really looks like—the parts people don’t always see, the lessons I’ve learned, and why I believe no spouse should have to navigate this life feeling alone.

Whether you’re married to a firefighter, another first responder, or simply looking for a place where real conversations happen, I’m so glad you’re here.

Thank you for listening, and welcome to the Stronger Than the Shift community.

    In this episode:

    • How I met my husband (and accidentally tried to set him up with someone else!)
    • Our unexpected journey into the fire service
    • Becoming parents during COVID
    • Losing my job, selling our family horse farm, and starting over
    • Postpartum anxiety, therapy, and learning to take care of myself
    • Why I created Stronger Than the Shift
    • What you can expect from future episodes

If this episode resonates with you, I’d love for you to follow the podcast, leave a review, and share it with another first responder spouse. Every follow, review, and share helps this community grow and reminds someone else that they are not alone.
