Men struggle with emotional presence in a different way. They're not typically filtering the present through past emotions — they're not aware of what they're feeling or why they're feeling it in the first place. Most men have strong emotions; very few know what's behind them. And that gap — between feeling something and understanding it — is what keeps men defensive, hidden, and unable to be the anchor their families need. When a man actually understands why he feels insecure or reactive, he stops hiding it and starts doing something about it.
The physical version of this problem is harder to miss — because our culture has built entire industries around helping you not be here. Alcohol, screens, gambling, pornography, social media, endless entertainment: all of them are in the business of dulling your senses or transporting you somewhere else. The moments when you're genuinely alive — completely physically engaged with the world around you — are the moments none of those things can give you. And you cannot have them and be numbed at the same time.
Mentally, a Harvard study confirmed what experience suggests: the more a person's mind wanders, the less happy they are. Conversely, the more focused — the more concentrated and present in a single task or purpose — the more satisfaction follows. Paul's phrase captures it simply: I press on toward the goal. One goal, one direction, not flitting from thing to thing. And Jesus created the conditions for that kind of mental freedom to exist — because when your identity, your purpose, and your destination are settled, the distractions lose their pull. Now, in this moment, is where your life is. The challenge is to show up for it.

Discussion Questions
1. What are you using to dull your senses or distract yourself from the present moment? How much of your life is that actually stealing from you?
2. For the men: do you know what you're feeling and why? Or do you experience strong emotions without understanding where they come from? What difference does that make?
3. Paul says "I press on toward the goal." What is your goal — the one thing you're moving toward? Is your daily life actually organized around it, or are you scattered?
