Join Stickier as they explore how to become a more effective and authentic presenter in the camp industry. Kelly Shuna shares how watching great speakers inspired her to present, how her approach has evolved from trying to identify what she does better than others to sharing lessons learned through failure, and how she builds presentations that connect with her audience. The conversation covers finding inspiration, balancing theory with practical tools, preparing without losing your natural voice, and adapting presentations to shorter attention spans. Whether you are leading staff orientation, presenting at a camp conference, or training your leadership team, this episode offers practical ways to make your message more memorable without feeling like you have to be the expert in the room.

Key Takeaways:

• Let Passion Guide Your Presentation. Choose topics that genuinely excite you or address problems you care deeply about solving. Passion makes it easier to speak naturally, helps your audience connect with the material, and creates energy that can make your message more memorable.
• Prepare Enough to Feel Natural. There is no single correct way to prepare a presentation. Kelly Shuna develops her ideas, organizes key points, creates visually engaging slides, and talks through the material until it feels natural. The goal is to find a preparation process that supports your style rather than restricting it.
• Make Space for Movement and Participation. Attention spans and learning preferences change, and a long presentation filled with information can leave people overwhelmed. Build in opportunities for discussion, movement, reflection, and participation so attendees can engage with the ideas instead of simply listening.

Join Stickier as they sit down with Dave Brown, a former social worker and current year-round camp director at Mountain Camp, to discuss the evolution of his speaking career. Dave shares his journey from running staff orientation to presenting on conference stages, addressing the deep-seated anxiety that many presenters feel regardless of their experience level. The conversation focuses on reframing pre-performance nerves into fuel for impact, shifting focus away from ego toward audience helpfulness, and intentionally structuring presentations for lasting engagement.

Key Takeaways:

• Acknowledge Nerves as Preparation. Even veteran speakers experience anxiety prior to stepping on stage. Reframing physical tension as the body’s way of preparing to perform allows presenters to lean into the moment rather than fight the discomfort.
• Shift the Focus to Audience Need. Effective presentations stem from understanding what the audience wants, values, and struggles with. Center the content on solving a genuine problem for the room rather than trying to sound smart or overly rehearsed.
• Utilize Acronyms and Space for Processing. While storytelling brings authentic emotion, simple acronyms provide a clear structure for younger staff to retain information. Pairing audience members together to process and discuss key concepts ensures the material actually sticks.

Join hosts Ryan and Kelly as they introduce Stickier, a podcast dedicated to helping camp directors and leadership staff build presentations that connect and resonate. In this inaugural episode, Ryan and Kelly unpack their own backgrounds, share pivotal inflection points in their speaking journeys, and outline the framework of Stickier. They discuss why public speaking is a learnable craft, how to structure content for maximum impact, and why focusing on audience needs outweighs simply trying to sound smart.

Key Takeaways:

• Shift Your Focus from Content Knowledge to Delivery and Audience Needs. Presenting effectively requires moving beyond simply sharing good content or trying to prove your expertise. Delivering a sticky presentation means structuring your message so the audience can digest it, connect with it, and walk away with clear, actionable insights.
• Work Backward from Clear Takeaways and End Goals. Successful presentations begin with a defined vision of what you want attendees to remember. By identifying a small number of core takeaways first, you can trim unnecessary filler, shape your narrative logically, and ensure every minute of your talk serves a purpose.
• Embrace the Vulnerability of Practice and Growth. Becoming a better speaker requires courage and intentional practice, whether that means rehearsing out loud, recording yourself, or asking audiences to make meaning of your message. Being willing to be bad at something new is the essential first step toward mastering the craft of communication.
