概要
Episode 16, and Frank's off on sabbatical with the family — so Deraj brings in two guests who've both lived the question at the center of this one: what happens to a creative when they step out of the spotlight without leaving music? McKinney Griffin is a musician turned director, cinematographer and editor — "what happens when somebody refuses to pick just one lane." Ray Rock (Raymond Castro) is an award-winning producer and DJ who's worked with Lecrae, Andy Mineo and Social Club Misfits, and now coaches and mentors artists from behind the scenes. After a laundry-vs-dishes debate and a heat chat about GTA 6 literally transforming Miami into Vice City, the real conversation begins. Ray Rock frames it: there's a specific feeling to being "part of the machine," but a different confidence in knowing how the machine works — and sometimes stepping back isn't quitting, it's getting a wider angle. McKinney makes it personal: he thought being the poster-boy recording artist was the only lane until he found the "back door" of sync licensing, left the label to build his own system, and ended up licensing his music, becoming a present stay-at-home dad, seeing his first six figures, and coaching another artist — even while admitting the pivot honestly felt like giving up at first. Ray Rock adds the story of Delges Mustafa, who stepped back from his own spotlight to work creative for Andy Mineo and ended up designing clothing Jay-Z wore in Paris. The throughline: as the artist you're subject to the system, but behind the scenes you can build your own — and real success stops being everyone knowing your name and becomes your family getting the best version of you, which is why Ray Rock is stepping back to the front with his single "I'm Becoming." Then it gets honest. McKinney tells the story of performing for 70,000 people in a stadium in Spain as a boxer's walkout — and realizing the moment wasn't about him, kicking the camera back to the fighter as the crowd erupted ("playing background," and the song was literally called "Moment"). The background gives you leverage but also somewhere to hide ("am I still serving, or scared to be seen?"); nothing is lost, everything is an ingredient; there's a difference between visibility and value, between being famous and being necessary; the spotlight is a tool, not your home; and the aim was never to stop struggling — it's to persevere well while you do. Ray Rock closes on the parable of the talents and a plain charge: get into community, don't isolate, and don't be a bum. 🎙 Hosted by Deraj → https://www.instagram.com/justderaj/ 🎤 Guests: Ray Rock → https://www.instagram.com/IamRayRock/ · McKinney → https://www.instagram.com/McKinney.mp4/ 📲 Follow the podcast → https://www.instagram.com/rep.indie/ Subscribe → https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq5OtnWdhtGiO7rnQHa-wGQ Join rep.indie → http://repindie.club/ Got a win or a question? → https://forms.clickup.com/8589472/f/86450-78391/3Q1IFDNE9PGSYIVAF1 --- Chapters 0:00 Frank's out (he went team Android) — welcome back 1:37 Meet the guests: McKinney Griffin and Ray Rock 4:43 Weekly check-in — laundry, dishes, and an animated series 9:41 Heat chat — GTA 6 turns Miami into Vice City 16:50 Main topic — stepping out of the spotlight 18:26 Being part of the machine vs knowing how it works 20:29 Stepping back isn't quitting — it's a wider angle 22:01 McKinney: I thought being the poster boy was the only lane 23:21 Finding the sync back door — you don't have to sell yourself 25:34 Level up or giving up?
