Frank Harmon spent ten years reading a creek like a gauge. He should have been reading it like a message.

At Ironwood, a night with no sleep in it turns into a morning with an answer in it, nine to eleven days, the same interval, year after year, buried in his own overwritten ledgers. Herald puts a name to what it means: the containment was never a wall, it was a ring, and someone reversed it a long time ago. It isn't leaking. It's pumping.

Michael comes out to the fence still not knowing which he'd rather hear, and gets an answer to a question he's been afraid to ask out loud, whether the thing coming for Willow's Bend started coming because of him, or just found him in the way. Herald doesn't soften it. Michael doesn't flinch, not where anyone can see.

Across town, Roy Chandler buries an old man on a bright Saturday afternoon and learns, at the edge of an open grave with ninety mourners around him, that the iron in his pocket has never once done what he thought it did. Not everything he's carried for ten years was ever meant for the hollow's creatures. Some of it was meant for something else. He calls Frank before he's finished being honest with himself about what he saw.

And back at the south fence, on an ordinary dry Wednesday night, Frank watches the creek do something water isn't supposed to do, and when he runs the arithmetic against a death forty miles north, the two clocks he's been keeping turn out to be one clock, with two hands, closing on the same ground.

Episode 5 of Season 2 of Tales from The Hollow

Michael Anderson is keeping two ledgers now, and he's the only one doing the math.

At Hartwell, he notices things he would have dismissed a year ago — a coworker who isn't sleeping, a dog that won't stop barking at the tree line. Small things. The net tightening.

At home, it's the Sinclairs. Quinn mentions it in passing, the way she tells him everything — her mother hasn't been sleeping either, her father saw something in the yard he can't describe. She's not alarmed. Not yet. Michael is careful about his reaction.

He calls Frank from a pay phone instead of the phone in his own hallway. Frank confirms what Michael already suspected: this fits the pattern. They disagree about whether to warn the Sinclairs. Frank says not yet — a warning without context does more harm than good. Michael isn't sure he agrees. He defers anyway. For now.

He tries to tell Quinn the truth a second time. He gets further than he did at the drive-in. He's almost there. And then Quinn says something completely ordinary, completely loving, and Michael understands exactly what he stands to lose. His nerve goes. She never notices the pivot. He drives home furious with himself.

Across town, Roy Chandler is arranging a funeral when a grieving family mentions a detail that stops him cold — where their relative died, and what was found nearby. Roy writes it down in a steadier hand than he feels. Then he calls Herald.

And that evening, alone, Michael sees the mailman for the first time since the farmhouse. Not at his house. Somewhere ordinary. Somewhere public. There and then not there, and nobody else reacts at all.

The dread isn't waiting at the edge of sleep anymore. It's standing in daylight now.

Frank Harmon has been telling himself he needs more time. He doesn't have it.

Four years since Michael Anderson stood in the lodge at Ironwood. Four years and one month, if anyone were counting. He has not been counting. He has been building a life instead — a factory job, crew lead since January, a girl named Quinn who sits in the back pew at First Methodist, a family on Walnut Street that doesn't ask questions he isn't ready to answer.

The phone rings on a Thursday afternoon.

"I need you to come out to Ironwood," Frank says. "When you can. Soon."

Michael drives to Ironwood and finds Herald McKinnon waiting at the table — the man who pulled his family out of a blizzard eleven years ago, the man whose seven words have lived in Michael since he was ten years old. What Herald and Frank have been reading across Wawaset County has a center. Michael already knows where it is.

The siren still runs at 8:47. Michael has only heard it twice in his life. He won't forget either time.
