Welcome to Stars of Sacrifice: WWII—the official podcast of Stories Behind the Stars.
More than 421,000 Americans lost their lives in World War II. Every one of them had a story worth saving—and worth sharing.

When a serviceman or servicewoman was killed in action, their family was presented with a banner bearing a single gold star. Stories Behind the Stars was created to ensure those stars are never forgotten by building one central digital home for the stories of the more than 421,000 Americans who gave their lives in service to our nation.

This national effort—researched, written, and financially supported by people who believe the fallen must be remembered—exists to ensure future generations can learn about the Americans who paid the ultimate price for freedoms we too often take for granted.

Stories Behind the Stars partners with genealogy and historical organizations across the country. Through Stars of Sacrifice: WWII podcast, we bring these stories to life on an audio platform—reaching younger generations, those who are able to dream because of the brave.

Press play, and step into the stories of those whose courage shaped the world we live in today.

  • 2nd Lt. Daniel Vernon Hayes, US Marine Corp, Naval Aviator, KIA Feb 16, 1945
    2026/08/02
The February raids against Japan helped clear the way for the invasion of Iwo Jima only days later.
History remembers the operation for its strategic success But that success came at a tremendous cost. Daniel Vernon Hayes was one of the young aviators who paid that price. His name remains etched in stone, but his story reminds us that behind every inscription was a family who loved someone they would never see again.

More than 421,000 Americans gave their lives during World War II.
Behind every name was a person—a son or daughter, husband or wife. Each left behind loved ones forever marked by a Gold Star. Behind every Gold Star is a family whose lives were forever changed by a telegram and the silence that followed.
Stars of Sacrifice honors the men and women of the Second World War by telling the stories behind the names engraved on memorials and preserved in casualty records Because behind every casualty was a life, a family, and a story worth remembering.

More than eighty years have passed since Harry Pinti made the ultimate sacrifice in Normandy.
His story began in a small New York town, with immigrant parents who came to America seeking a better life.
It continued in basketball courts, boxing rings, and family gatherings.
And it ended on a battlefield far from home.

    2026/07/04
Charles Himmler's story reminds us that victory in World War II depended not only on the soldiers fighting on the front lines but also on the young airmen who climbed into heavy bombers day after day, knowing every mission could be their last.
He left behind his family, his hometown of Trafford, and the promise of a life just beginning.
Today, because we tell his story, he is remembered.
