Stanford basketball is firing on all cylinders after losing star scorer Ebuka Okorie to the NBA draft, and they’ve answered the call with a blockbuster roster overhaul. The Cardinal landed Ivy League Player of the Year Nick Townsend — a versatile 6’7” forward with nearly 16 points and 7 rebounds per game plus an extra year of eligibility. They also added towering seven-footer Austin Maurer from Seattle, who brings size and energy, and secured a major recruiting coup with Aziz Olajuwon, son of Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. With a grueling 18-game home slate and nine ACC matchups ahead, Stanford’s revamped squad is primed to break through their recent .500 ceiling and make serious noise in one of college basketball’s toughest conferences.

Stanford’s ACC basketball season kicks off with a brutal road stretch, facing Notre Dame, Louisville, Duke, and North Carolina early — but they’ll rebound with key home games against Virginia and Florida State. Coach Kyle Smith keeps them competitive, finishing last year 9-9 in the conference while still reaching the NCAA Tournament. The schedule leans heavily on home-court advantage later in the year, with five of their final seven games at Maples Pavilion, including matchups against Miami, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Boston College, and a dramatic rematch with Cal. It’s going to be a grind from start to finish — and fans will have to wait for TV details, but the battles are already set.

Kyle Smith is rewriting Stanford men’s basketball history, becoming the first coach to notch 20+ wins in his first two seasons with a 41-26 record and back-to-back winning conference campaigns. After years of near-misses in the NCAA tournament, the program is poised to break its drought since 2013-14. Last season’s breakout star was freshman Ebuka Okorie, averaging over 23 points, while Maxime Raynaud led the charge the year before—eventually drafted by the Kings. Next season, Stanford’s loaded with talent: a top-25 recruiting class featuring stars Aziz Olajuwon and Julius Price, plus key transfers like NCAA minutes leader Christian Bliss and 7-footer Austin Maurer, plus veteran scorer Nick Townsend—all giving Smith a deep, versatile roster primed for a big leap.
