  • What 11 Women Taught Me About Finding Your Voice | Season 1 Lessons Learned
    2026/04/13

Have a question for this guest? Text us — it may be featured in "Ask the SpeakHER".

What does it really take to find your voice — and what happens when it gets taken from you?

In this special solo episode, SpeakHER Sessions host Kim Atwood reflects on the six most powerful lessons she learned from Season 1. Ten episodes, eleven women, and more honesty than she expected when she started asking questions about voice and confidence.

This isn't a recap. It's a reflection. Because somewhere between interviewing women about their stories, Kim found herself sitting with some hard and beautiful truths about her own.

    In this episode, Kim shares:

    • Why voice almost always gets quiet before it gets found and why that silence is part of the story, not a detour from it
    • What this season's guests taught her about waiting seasons and why the waiting is never as pointless as it feels
    • How grief showed up in nearly every conversation this season and why the women who had been through the most loss were also the most spacious in how they loved others
    • Why your body of work is shaping you long before you realize it's doing that
    • The role that people — spouses, sisters, mentors, friends — play in giving us permission to use our voices
    • Why advocacy is simply what happens when your personal story meets someone else's need

Kim also shares a heartfelt thank you to the Season 1 sponsors and community partners who believed in SpeakHER Sessions before it had anything to show for itself:

  • SpeakHER Sessions with Shannon Henderson & Rebecca Wolfe
    2026/04/06

Have a question for this guest? Text us — it may be featured in "Ask the SpeakHER".

To close out season 1 of Speaker Sessions, Kim brings it all the way home—literally—by inviting her sisters, Shannon Henderson and Rebecca Wolfe, into the conversation.

This episode is a warm, honest, and funny look at how our earliest experiences of being heard (and unheard) shape the way we use our voice as women.

    Together, they talk about:

    • Growing up with a big age gap and how each sister remembers the other
    • The expectations they absorbed from their parents—manners, excellence, and “doing things well” versus career or life-pressure
    • What they chose not to carry forward: perfect houses, rigid gender roles, and unspoken rules about who “should” do what
    • How traditions, family trips, and “we don’t go against the family” energy created a tight sister bond
    • The reality of birth order, oldest-daughter pressure, and whether those stereotypes actually fit
    • The kind of support system they want to model for the next generation—their daughters, nieces, and nephews

At the core, this is an episode about belonging, sisterhood, and the kind of relationships that make it safer to show up fully as yourself—even when you’re at your messiest, loudest, or most unsure.

If you’ve ever wanted deeper connection with your own family, this one will give you a lot to think about—and probably make you laugh out loud along the way.

  • SpeakHER Sessions with Jan Westmoreland-Sipes
    2026/03/30

Have a question for this guest? Text us — it may be featured in "Ask the SpeakHER".

In this episode of Speaker Sessions, Kim sits down with Jan Westmoreland-Sipes—affectionately known in her community as “Mama Jan”—a lifelong educator, camp leader, devoted mom, and grandmother whose voice has been shaped by deep love, profound loss, and a life of quiet, faithful service.

    Together they talk about:

    • Finding your calling in the classroom
How Jan went from a little girl who hated school to a beloved kindergarten teacher who remembers generations of students by name.
    • Advocating for early childhood education
Jan’s role in the early days of 4K programs in South Carolina, piloting full-day 5K, and why she believes kids need meaningful school experiences earlier than age five.
    • Camp Gravitt and generational impact
The story of how she and her first husband, Mac, became deeply involved in an Episcopal church camp, led staff teams, and watched kids who struggled in school absolutely shine at camp. Jan shares what it meant to see former campers grow into counselors, leaders, and now the camp’s director.
    • Grief, parenting, and resilient faith
Jan opens up about Mac’s three-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer, parenting three daughters through loss, and why she chose to stay positive and present for them, even on the hardest days. She reflects on the community that held them up—church, school, camp, and extended family—and the way grief reshaped her strength and compassion.
    • Loving again after loss
Jan shares the unexpected story of reconnecting with Darryl, a longtime family friend, what it was like for her daughters to navigate having a new father figure, and her encouragement for anyone considering dating or remarriage after losing a spouse: look for joy, and don’t spend your life alone out of fear.
    • Living with joy and serving others
Why Jan believes growth never stops, how serving others (meals, visits, simple acts of presence) keeps her heart soft, and the core message she wants her daughters—and strangers—to remember:
Put God first, cherish your family, stay close to one another, and live every day as if it might be your last.

If you’ve ever walked through loss, questioned how to be strong for your kids, or wondered whether there’s room for joy and love again on the other side of grief, this conversation with Mama Jan will encourage you.
