We continue in Week 2 of a month long series called "The Changemakers" put out by Marcia McFee and Worship Design Studio. Each week we are looking at the Feeding of the 5,000 story from a fresh perspective along with a complimentary text that works with our theme. The learning is to inspire us to question how we too might be Changemakers in our time, place and context, walking in the path of Jesus. Week 1 our theme was Compassion. Week 2 our theme is Collaboration. Jesus invited the disciples to be an active part in his work in the world. He trained them, cared for them and sent them out to do as he did, knowing there would come a day when he would no longer be with them and they would need this training to continue God's work in the world. Jesus collaborates with us.

We begin a month (September, 2026) long sermon series from Worship Design Studio by Marcia McFee called, "Changemakers." Each week we will hear the "Feeding of the 5,000" story from Mark's Gospel along with a complimentary text which demonstrates the virtue God is calling us to, to be more like Jesus and enact real change in the world. This week the theme is Compassion. Jesus had compassion for the crowd and the Good Samaritan had compassion for the man on the side of the road who had been beaten, robbed and left half-dead. Where might we feel God calling us to see the 'other' and one of the many needs in the world and to respond with compassion?

This Sunday we explored the text of Moses at the burning bush. The fire that did not consume the bush captured Moses' attention. From there, it was God's command that captured Moses' heart and great purpose. To come before the ruler of Egypt (the superpower of the time) and demand that the ruler let the people go whom they are using and profiting off of, is a huge ask! Who am I to do that? Yet God assures Moses that it's not all on Moses really, but God will be the one directing the path and the words. God wants to use Moses and will be with him all along. The same is true of us. Wherever we go and to whatever work God calls us, God is there in the midst of it all. And if anyone should ask who this God is, this is the God of our ancestors whose name is so great that God is THE I AM.

Everyone has giftings of things that we are good at and things we enjoy. Part of our highest call is to discover what those gifts are in ourselves and then to use those gifts for the glory of God. It can be all too easy for us to get puffed up about what we excel at, but the Apostle Paul reminds us that we all have a part and are to serve God and one another in humility. In this, we pray to be transformed more into the image and likeness of Jesus as we fulfill the call God has given to each of us to live our lives in the light of God's glory and Kindom-come.

Rev. Lauren is back and before we enter today's scripture of Jacob wrestling with a man overnight, Lauren helps us remember the full context of Jacob's story to this point; a story full of complicated family dynamics that shows how we all contend with God and people in our ongoing work of being the very people of God. In our great days, our everyday ordinary days and our hardest days alike, God is with us in and through it all. Thanks be to God!

While Rev. Lauren was away on vacation one of our great church leadership Olwen Walker offered to step in and lead service. Drawing inspiration from Ben Cremer's 30-Day Devotional, "Following Jesus in a World Obsessed with Empires," Olwen shares what it means to be a community of people aiming to follow in Christ's Word and Way in our time and place.
