    2025/08/27

Grab your notebook and a writing utensil, we're going back to school as it's a Chris episode this week! Chris is taking us through what many people likely think of when hearing about the toxic avenger...the Toxic Crusaders! If you don't know about the Toxic Cursaders, it's an early-90's children's cartoon about the Toxic Avenger. How does it play into the upcoming release of Toxic Avenger (2023)? Who knows! But we're going to find out how it plays into the history of the Toxic Avenger!

  • Episode 7 - The Toxic Avenger (1984)
    2025/08/13

Are you ready for a hideously deformed monster of superhuman size and strength! Well have I got good news for you! This week we're discussing The Toxic Avenger (1984) to see the origins of our choice for our second cycle!

As we build toward the release of The Toxic Avenger (2023...yes, that's correct) we wanted to see where the series began and boy oh boy did we. This...this is a movie. Yup. It's a movie alright. I...I don't know what else to write here. Is it the world's most offensive piece of trash or a B-movie masterpiece? The guys discuss and come to some shocking conclusions.

  • Episode 6 - Cyrano
    2025/08/04

And we're back at it! For our second cycle we're going to be prepping for upcoming release of The Toxic Avenger! It's a remake of the 1980's cult classic of the same name about -- and stop me if you've heard this before -- gets super-powers from toxic waste. I think? I haven't seen it yet. You'd think that maybe we'd start with the orignal film but what fun is that? Instead we're starting with...

...Cyrano! As The Toxic Avenger is starring Peter Dinkledge Joe decided to have us watch the breadthe of this man's acting talents. Sure, you likely know him as Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones but did you know he played Cyrano de Bergerac? In a musical? Yeah...we're going there.

  • Patron Bonus Episode - Second Hand Lions
    2025/07/30

Due to some personal things going on behind the scenes we weren't able to record our episode for this week. We're recording it tonight though and so we'll be back on track for our next episode! In the meantime, we thought we'd share a fun episode we did for our patrons! One of our Patreon tiers offers patrons the chance to choose a show for us to cover each cycle. During our first cycle they chose the film Second Hand Lions, a feel-good...I'm gonna call it a comedy?...about a young man living with two old men with gold.

    *checks notes*

Yep...that's about it. I think Joe missed this episode but Nick and Chris went on a tangent that really instilled the importance of having Joe around. Check it out and if you enjoy, consider supporting us on Patreon.com/Somewhereonthescreen

  • Episode 5 - Superman (2025)
    2025/07/16

It's finally here! Superman has been released in theaters, we've studied, prepared, and watched the film while a bunch of teenagers kicked the back of our chairs! We are officially ready to discuss the official beginning of the DCCU!

We open this week's discussion with a brief (20ish minute) spoiler-free discussion of our thoughts on the film so if you haven't seen it yet and are simply looking to find out if it's "for you" then feel free to pop in and see what we thought. After that 20 minute mark, though, it's a no-holds-barred (and immediately spoils the only actual "revelation" in the film.

Come join us while we discuss everything from whether we thing Lex Luthor ever steps off a green-screen, if the film avoids the fate of The Mummy (2017), and whether Rachel Brosnahan is most or least attractive member of this pretty people only film (I'm not proud of this part of the conversation...but it did happen).

  • Episode 4: All-Star Superman
    2025/07/02

Hey! It's a bonus episode! Sorta? Okay...it's a bonus regular episode!

So somewhere along the line we realized our schedule meant we needed an extra episode before Superman (2025) comes out. After some discussion (and by that I mean Nick giving us a dissertation on James Gunn's influences for the upcoming film) we decided to watch All-Star Superman, the animated film based on the comic book of the same name. According to Nick, James Gunn has said it's a major inspiration for how he was thinking about crafting a Superman story while he was writing this film. So let's see what that influence actually is! It's a fascinating film! And Joe didn't get to talk about it with us. We'll mention what happened. It's a whole thing. Listen to find out more!

  • Episode 3 - Superman (1978)
    2025/06/18

As we continue to build up to the big release for James Gunn's Superman (2025) in July, we're talking about Superman (1978) in this episode!

It's the gold standard of what a Superman film has been held against for decades. Between Christopher Reeves's iconic performance, John Williams's memorable score, and Margot Kidder's constant screaming this is the film James Gunn is trying to live up to...but how does the (nearly) 50 year old film hold up? The guys take a look at the film and see how they'd like to see James Gunn evolve the form.

As always, if you enjoy the show, please share it with a friend and leave us a review on Apple or Spotify. Every review helps other people find the show and is an enormous help for us.

If you're enjoying the show and want more, please consider becming a Patron on Patreon.com/somewhereonthescreen where we host special bonus episodes on our $10 tier. We'll be covering the HBO show (and playstation video game) The Last of Us next week exclusively on our Patron feed so join us to hear our thoughts on the show.

  • Episode 2 - Brightburn
    2025/06/04

It's Nick's turn to choose our film for the cycle and he's going with Brightburn, James Gunn's original attempt at Superman through the lens of a horror film. Only...it's not James Gunn's attempt at Superman because he didn't direct it, only produced it...but it's still his? I don't know. It's all very confusing. Nick tries to explain his thoughts but mostly the guys just B.S. about the film.
