Sometimes you need to work on yourself. Sometimes your partner actually is the problem.
In Part Two of HOT AIR’s deep dive into the supposed “five stages of long-term love,” Joshua breaks down stages three through five: the Villain/Victim Era, Mirror Mirror, and the idea of finally reaching a “conscious relationship.”
When does healthy self-reflection become endless self-blame? Does fighting for a relationship always mean staying? Can previous relationships train us to expect rejection and judgment from partners who aren’t actually treating us that way? And does a healthy relationship really have a final stage?
Joshua also opens up about the contrast between his marriage and his current relationship with Kai, including learning to express difficult emotions without feeling interrogated, letting someone see his authentic personality, and realizing that one person’s behavior does not predict how every future partner will treat you.
Because chemistry isn’t enough. Staying isn’t automatically commitment. Leaving isn’t automatically failure. And healing doesn’t always mean learning how to tolerate more.
Maybe the most important question in a relationship isn’t “What stage are we in?”
It’s “Am I becoming more myself here—or less?”
