In October of 2008, my closest friend told me he had discovered something unusual at my aunt's old rural property outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

A note mentioned a metal container hidden inside an underground storm shelter.

My name was written on it.

And according to my friend, it might contain something my parents had left behind many years earlier.

I had spent most of my life wondering about them.

So I agreed to go.

The property had been empty for months.

Behind the house was an old concrete shelter built into the side of a hill.

I walked down the steps alone.

Inside were metal shelves, old blankets, a battery lantern, and several storage containers.

But the container I was looking for was nowhere to be found.

Then I heard something behind me.

The heavy steel door closed.

I walked back toward the entrance.

The handle wouldn't move.

I called out to my friend.

For several seconds, there was no answer.

Then I heard his familiar voice from the other side.

He asked me a question I didn't understand.

Something about copies of financial records.

That's when I realized our visit to the property wasn't what I had believed.

A few moments later, I heard his truck leaving.

I checked my phone.

No signal.

The shelter was quiet.

Nobody knew I had gone there.

And the next scheduled visit to the property wasn't until Monday.

I looked around the room, wondering how I could contact someone.

Then I noticed an old hand-crank radio and a ventilation duct leading toward the surface.

Something about them gave me an idea.

But what I eventually learned about my friend's actions was far more unsettling than the afternoon itself.

Because the person I had trusted for years knew exactly which memories would bring me to that shelter.
