Welcome to the Denver News Update for May 29th, 2025. I'm Morgan Riley, bringing you the latest from our city. Word on the streets of Denver is that we've had quite a soggy May. The National Weather Service confirms that metro Denver has surpassed its monthly rainfall average, with 3.23 inches recorded since the beginning of the month—well above the average of 2.16 inches. The southern metro and Palmer Divide areas saw the most precipitation, with some areas near Elizabeth and Parker receiving between 3 to 4 inches. This rainy pattern is expected to continue into early June with daily chances of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, typical of our late spring weather. In transportation news, Denver International Airport experienced significant disruptions on Tuesday morning when thick fog rolled into the area, prompting a ground stop. After it was lifted, more than 300 flights were delayed and over 40 were cancelled. The weather service indicates we should be more in the clear over the next few days. A major change is coming to one of Denver's most recognizable landmarks. City leaders announced Tuesday that they're rebranding the 16th Street Mall, dropping the word "mall" from the corridor's name. This change comes as the area continues to evolve as a central hub in our downtown landscape. Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures will warm into the upper 80s after holding in the 70s through Thursday. Perfect weather to check out some of the fantastic events happening around town. Speaking of events, the cultural calendar is packed this month. The Ellie Caulkins Opera House recently hosted the 2025 Bobby G Awards, and the Garner Galleria Theatre is kicking off "Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole A Song" this week, running through June 29th. Music lovers can enjoy performances all across the metro area, including Katy Perry's show at Ball Arena on May 15th. For those traveling to the mountains this weekend, be aware that the Colorado Department of Transportation has announced several construction projects on popular mountain routes this summer. If you're heading up to the high country, you might want to allow extra time for your journey. This has been Morgan Riley, your neighbor in the news.
