Seattle's annual inflation rate just hit 4.4% — a full percentage point above the national city average of 3.4%, and among the worst on the entire West Coast. Energy prices are up nearly 16%, groceries are surging, and restaurants are bleeding wallets dry. But the data isn't the punch line. The punch line is that Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson built her entire campaign on affordability.

Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers are unambiguous: while San Francisco — Seattle's closest economic peer — matched the national average, Seattle pulled ahead by a full point. Economist James McCafferty of Western Washington University's Center for Economic and Business Research notes it isn't just energy driving the gap — it's food, groceries, and restaurants compounding in ways other metros simply aren't experiencing. That's what policy choices look like when they finally hit your bank account.

Mayor Wilson has been floating "progressive revenue" ideas in her latest budget, then quietly retreating — because she knows the political optics of raising taxes when residents are already getting crushed. The affordability promises from the campaign trail? On this scorecard, they're all failing. Every single one.
