In which we are introduced to the year 1699, a time when peace had been recently brokered and the English navy was languishing in quiet surveillance, while Mr Vanslyperken, a man of Dutch descent possessing a most unpleasant character, commands a cutter named the Yungfrau with a sinister affection for his fierce dog, Snarleyyow. Amidst this setting, the hardships of the crew and the petty intrigues aboard are laid bare, as the men prepare to receive the return of their boats following a night of fruitless labour under a cloud of grumbling and slights.
