  • What Are the Benefits of a Business Podcast?
    2026/08/23

"Notice what's not on that list. Downloads, sponsors, the stuff that everyone obsesses over, but is honestly the smallest part of it."

This is a solo episode. I'm Niall Mackay, founder of Seven Million Bikes Podcasts, where my team and I build shows for businesses around the world. In this one, I break down what actually makes a business podcast worth doing, and it's not the two things most people assume.

I wanted to record this because I keep hearing the same assumption from business owners: they think a podcast is only worth starting if it gets big downloads or lands a sponsor. So instead, I went through what actually pays off week after week, the kind of value that never shows up on a stats screen but ends up mattering far more.

    Key Takeaways

    • You Get Sharper at Your Own Business: Explaining what you do out loud, every week, forces a clarity that a strategy session rarely produces.
    • That Clarity Spreads Everywhere: Sales calls, marketing copy, and investor pitches all get easier once you've said your story a hundred times.
    • Doors Open You Can't Plan For: Relationships, referrals, and opportunities show up as a byproduct of consistency, not something you can chase directly.
    • Downloads and Sponsors Aren't the Point: They're the easiest things to measure, which is exactly why people fixate on them, and exactly why they're the wrong focus.
    • The Real Benefits Take Patience: Most hosts quit right before clarity and unexpected opportunity start to compound.

  • Is It Normal to Have Low Podcast Downloads?
    2026/08/17

"So, if your stat screen says that there's 43 downloads this week, don't you dare quit. 43 people chose to spend time with you."

I wanted to record this one because I keep seeing the same moment play out with the business owners I work with: they check their stats, see a small number, and quietly decide the podcast isn't working. So instead of the usual growth-hack advice, I wanted to reframe the number itself. A download isn't a stat, it's a person who chose to show up. That shift, from counting downloads to counting people, is the whole point of this episode.

    Key Takeaways

    • Low Numbers Are Normal: Most podcasts, especially niche or business ones, never reach mass download counts, and were never built to.
    • A Download Is a Person: 43 downloads means 43 real people chose to spend time with your show, not a number to be embarrassed by.
    • Quitting Is the Real Mistake: Podcasts don't fail because of a small early download count, they fail when creators quit before consistency has a chance to compound.
    • Some of Your Listeners Are Clients: A small, engaged audience is more valuable than a large, indifferent one.
    • Reach the Right People, Not the Most People: The goal isn't chasing big numbers, it's building a show around the audience that actually matters to your business.

    Chapters and timestamps:

00:02– Why 43 downloads felt like failure to me, and why it isn't
    00:05 – Reframing a download as a real person, not a stat
00:07 – Why quitting over the number is the actual mistake
00:10 – What to do with a small, real audience
00:12 – Closing thoughts and how I build shows around the right listeners

  • Mistakes To Avoid When Starting A Podcast
    2026/08/10

"The podcast isn't the business. The podcast is the handshake that starts the business."

Nearly half of all podcasts are dead within three episodes, and one in three creators quit their show entirely. Most of them don't fail because the host was boring — they fail because of decisions made before anyone ever hit record. In this episode, I walk through the five mistakes I see businesses make over and over again when starting a podcast, and exactly how to avoid each one.

    Key Takeaways

    • Niche or Nothing: "Everything and anything" podcasts have no real listener. Define one ideal listener, not an audience, and test every episode idea against them.
    • One Show, One CTA: A podcast that promotes every guest's business but never your own is a free marketing channel, not a business asset.
    • Customers, Not Sponsors: Sponsorship money takes years of downloads to build. Your podcast's job is turning the right 200 listeners into clients, not chasing 100,000 downloads.
    • Start Before You're Ready: It took seven years to build the current setup, and the first, rough version of the show still built the entire business.
    • Audio Quality Is Brand Quality: Bad sound isn't a technical flaw, it's a trust problem. People judge fast, and "unedited" isn't the same as "natural."

    Chapters and Timestamps

00:00 – Why nearly half of podcasts die within 3 episodes
00:01 – Mistake #1: Starting a podcast about everything and anything, and how to define your one ideal listener
00:04 – Mistake #2: Turning your podcast into free marketing for everyone else
00:06 – Mistake #3: Starting a podcast to make money instead of making customers
00:09 – Mistake #4: Waiting until everything is perfect before you launch
00:12 – Mistake #5: Treating sound quality as an afterthought
