The Mercy of God

Mercy is kindness expressed in action toward someone who has committed an offense, an enemy, or someone otherwise within a person’s power. Mercy involves a differential of power or authority - the individual showing mercy is not obligated to show kindness or compassion, but provides a rescue, a relief, a way out of a situation that is causing misery, distress, or threat of harm or destruction.

Mercy is a major theme across the Old Testament. From earliest times, God reveals that he is merciful.

The Goodness of God

The apparent conflict between God’s holiness and God’s love is not real.

God is holy, and God is loving. God’s love arises out of his holiness.

While God is ethically holy and righteous, most references in Scripture to his goodness refer to his kindness, generosity, and love.

God is Holy

The root words for “holy” mean to cut or to separate.

Majestic Holiness

God is separate and absolutely distinct from everything in his creation.

1 Timothy 1:16: unapproachable light

God is “wholly other.”

This aspect of God’s holiness is also called “majestic holiness” and “transcendent majesty”.

Our understanding of God’s omnipotence is based on how we view the essential nature of the world. The Christian faith affirms that the world we live in is a spiritual world, created, sustained, and ruled by Almighty God.
