  • Ep. 05: Jeffrey Morgenthaler
    2025/04/07

Jeffrey Morgenthaler is your favorite bartender's favorite bartender. A James Beard award-winning author of “The Bar Book” and “Drinking Distilled”, Jeff has become one of the most influential figures for cocktails in the world, due in part to his prolific online writing on cocktail techniques and recipes, informed by many years of work behind the bar. After working for about a decade as the bar manager for Clyde Common in downtown Portland, Jeffrey now owns a new bar in partnership with The Kex Hotel - Pacific Standard - and continues to develop tools and share his knowledge of, passion for, and experience with cocktails and hospitality through his blog at jeffreymorgenthaler.com

We’ve gotten the privilege of knowing Jeff throughout the past few years, first as a guest at Cathedral, then eventually as a friend outside of the café. In this episode, Matt and Jeff dive into a conversation about the history of cocktails in the US, mental/physical health in the service industry, comparisons between specialty coffee and craft cocktail industries, how to inspire team members behind the bar, and more…

Recorded at Proud Mary Coffee Roasters in Portland, OR.

  • Ep. 01: Pilot
    2025/03/17

Setting the vision, diving in, getting our feet wet, testing ideas…it’s all gotta start somewhere, and for us, that’s in a ‘84 Vanagon under a tarp at Grandma’s house. Launching from this episode, we aim to build meaningful relationships with the people that are right in front of us through each conversation, as we practice asking questions and celebrating the wonder of the ordinary (or maybe not so ordinary).
Maybe we’ll talk about coffee, hospitality, and service — or maybe not.
Join in weekly for a deep dive with us as we explore.
