Does Cincinnati deserve custody of Joe Burrow? And at what point does being a loyal Bengals fan become a diagnosable condition?
Comedian Michael Turner joins A.M. Pfeffer on Hometown Blues for a full psychological examination of Cincinnati Bengals fandom. And considering this man built an entire stand-up comedy tour around following the Bengals to road games, the Institute has plenty of evidence to work with.
Michael is the original Road Warrior, a Cincinnati native who turned his football obsession into a touring comedy concept, performing stand-up in opposing NFL cities before heading into enemy territory to confront rival fans. Four seasons of traveling, performing, tailgating, and watching the Bengals find increasingly creative ways to disappoint him.
But before the examination begins, Michael explains why Cincinnati isn't really Ohio, defends the city's deeply misunderstood chili, and shares the remarkable personal tragedy that ultimately inspired his stand-up career.
He also revisits one of the most humiliating experiences imaginable: attending Super Bowl LVI in a full tiger suit, watching the Bengals lose to the Los Angeles Rams, and having to walk out of the stadium dressed like a defeated jungle animal while wealthy Rams fans congratulated themselves on a lovely afternoon.
Then we get into the football.
Is Joe Burrow saving the Bengals or enabling an organization that hasn't consistently surrounded him with championship-level talent? Did Cincinnati's unexpected Super Bowl appearance permanently distort the fan base's expectations? Does Zac Taylor deserve another chance? And without Burrow, what exactly is the Cincinnati Bengals' identity?
Michael has answers. A.M. has objections. And the New York Jets somehow catch strays along the way.
THEN THE INSTITUTE OPENS ITS DOORS.
ASSESSMENT #1: THE JOE BURROW CUSTODY HEARING
Michael must testify under oath about Cincinnati's fitness as a parent, evaluate potential adoptive families including the Los Angeles Rams, Arizona Cardinals, and Miami Dolphins, and confront one devastating question:
Would he rather Joe Burrow retire a Bengal without a championship or win three Super Bowls somewhere else?
The fate of a 29-year-old millionaire quarterback rests in the hands of a comedian wearing Bengals gear.
ASSESSMENT #2: THE CINCINNATI BENGALS PERFORMANCE REVIEW
Human Resources has received complaints.
Unfortunately, Michael doesn't realize the Institute has also been evaluating him.
His alleged workplace violations include excessive attachment, unauthorized travel, hostile work environment, and failure to disengage.
The Bengals have a performance problem. Michael has a boundary problem.
ASSESSMENT #3: ROAD WARRIOR EXPOSURE THERAPY
Would Michael consider a sold-out comedy show successful if the Bengals lost 41–10 the following afternoon?
What if his comedy show bombed but Cincinnati beat Baltimore?
And the ultimate decision: become a world-famous comedian who can never attend another Bengals game, or remain a successful working comic with lifetime access to every Bengals game?
His answer reveals something surprisingly personal about ambition, happiness, and what it actually means to have a successful career.
THE FINAL DIAGNOSIS: DSM 1.04 — WINDOW CLOSING ANXIETY
Joe Burrow is approaching 30. Championship opportunities aren't infinite. And Cincinnati fans have convinced themselves that every season might simultaneously be their best chance and their last.
The Institute prescribes a treatment plan. Michael requests beer.
Hometown Blues is where NFL fandom meets observational comedy, questionable psychiatric methodology, and the emotional consequences of loving a football team that doesn't love you back.

NFL fandom is ridiculous. I'm just documenting the evidence.
