What did your family teach you about money, and how much of that still influences your financial decisions today?

In this episode of Shop Class Finance, John Ryan explores why financial planning begins with understanding yourself, your values, and the life you want to build.

John discusses how childhood experiences shape our relationship with money, why couples often have different financial philosophies, and how defining your personal goals can make saving, investing, and other financial decisions more meaningful.

He also introduces the six types of wealth and shares stories from his childhood on a dairy farm in Central New York in 1975, reflecting on the family, community, and economic environment that helped shape his perspective.

This conversation is an invitation to examine the beliefs you've inherited, think more deeply about what financial security means to you, and begin building a financial plan around the life you actually want.

What if financial planning wasn't just about money, but about building a life you actually look forward to?

In this first episode of Shop Class Finance, financial advisor and life coach John Ryan introduces his approach to financial planning, life coaching, and economic security.

Starting with the familiar feeling of the “Sunday blues,” John explores how financial pressure, work, career, and the choices we make with our money can shape the way we experience our lives.

John introduces one of the foundational ideas behind Shop Class: your household is the original business. By thinking more intentionally about your household, finances, career, and future, you can start building a practical process to create the life you want.

He also introduces six types of wealth: financial, physical, mental, spiritual, relationships, and time. Rather than treating financial success as the final destination, John explains why financial security can provide the foundation for pursuing the other forms of wealth that make up a fulfilling life.

You'll also hear John's philosophy of combining practical tools, personal reflection, financial planning, and life coaching to examine where you are today and intentionally engineer your way toward a better future.
