The Reality of Global Yacht Expeditions and Asset Management

Navigating remote regions of the world requires an environment where every operational decision matters and the margin for error disappears.

In this episode of the Foster’s Yacht Services Podcast, CEO Dennis Foster sits down with professional yacht captain John Crupi to discuss the uncompromising reality of life at sea. With over 30 years of experience, John has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, visiting 70 countries across six continents. He shares the profound evolution of his career—from rowing a 12-foot dinghy to work washing boats in South Florida, to transitioning into competitive sportfishing, and eventually leading global expedition programs like the Dorothea program.

This conversation details the extreme situations encountered during worldwide expeditions, including fires on board, lightning strikes, mechanical failures, and violent storms. John emphasizes that there is no substitute for experience when managing multiple vessels in tandem across remote destinations like Patagonia, the Azores, Madeira, Ascension Island, and the South Pacific.

Following more than two decades at sea, John transitioned to land and founded Rubicon Maritime Group to address a critical gap in the industry. He now provides non-biased consulting for yacht owners, offering realistic expectations regarding purchasing, global operations, and the truth about why refit projects consistently exceed time and budget constraints.
