概要
On New Year’s Eve, 2009, a nine-year-old girl found her mother, Shele Danishefsky Kolkin, in a bathtub in their Upper West Side apartment. Shele was a 47-year-old senior vice president at UBS who had built a career on trust and a fortune of several million dollars. Her husband, Rod, lived across the hall. He told police she must have slipped and hit a bathroom cabinet. Her death was recorded as undetermined, and she was buried within days. But her family wouldn’t let it end. Despite their religious objections to an autopsy, they pushed to have her grave opened.

The examination found a fractured hyoid bone in her neck, and her death was reclassified as a homicide. What followed was a six-year investigation and a bitter war over custody, the estate and the children’s inheritance. Prosecutors said Shele was about to change her will, cutting off Rod’s access to her money. In 2019, a jury convicted Rod Kolkin of second-degree murder, and he was sentenced to 25 years to life. The conviction was upheld on appeal, and he has always maintained his innocence. A federal petition is still pending.

This episode follows Shele’s life, the marriage that fell apart, the evidence, and the family that remains divided. Content note: This episode discusses the death of a mother and a legal fight over her children. Listener discretion is advised.
