At 6:30 in the morning a 22-year-old texted her mother that she was on her way home and to heat the water for mate. Her mother boiled it. Araceli never arrived — and twenty-five days later she was found buried under rubble in a house police had already searched and cleared. Who sends a warm text from a phone whose owner may already be gone?
In this episode, we analyze the femicide of Araceli Fulés in San Martín, Argentina, and the four-year road to a verdict. We examine the scrubbed car trunk that tracking dogs flagged three times, the body moved and buried only after the first search, the courtroom threats sent to her mother, and the questions the trial never closed. How do men coordinate a cover-up while a mother waits with the kettle on?
Victim: Araceli Fulés
Age: 22 years old
Date: April 2, 2017
Location: San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Perpetrators: Carlos Damián Casals, Hugo Martín Cabañas, Marcelo Escobedo (and Darío Badaraco)
Cause of Death: Sexual assault and strangulation
- Araceli sent her mother a 6:30 a.m. text to heat the water for mate, then vanished; whether she or someone else sent it was never resolved.
- She was sexually assaulted and strangled at a salvage yard, and her body was kept in the trunk of a Renault Mégane for six to nine days despite the trunk being scrubbed with disinfectant.
- Tracking dogs flagged the trunk positive three times, and her body was later found buried under rubble in a house that had already been searched and found empty.
- During the 2021 trial, one defendant sent her mother a video of a submachine gun threatening the family, and another tried to enter a hearing with a blade.
- Three men received life sentences (35 years) for femicide; a fourth, Darío Badaraco, was killed in prison before the verdict, and five others were acquitted.
