- Carmen was born in 1985 and entered the relationship at age 19 with a man about 54 years old (a 20-year age gap).
- Carmen filed three separate complaints before the 2014 acid attack; each time authorities suggested conciliation rather than investigation.
- In 2013 Efrén attacked Carmen with a pickhammer, driving it into her stomach, arm, and several fingers; she survived and later filed a report that was not acted on.
- On February 20, 2014, Carmen’s two daughters (ages 8 and 11) were at school when Efrén arrived and poured acid, burning half her face, neck, chest, arms and legs.
- After the acid attack, Efrén lived free and worked as a taxi driver for seven years while Carmen spent those same seven years undergoing surgeries to rebuild her face.
