概要
Fear of being cut off from the line and left alone in freezing dark water drives this story: a diver’s tether shredded by a propeller, her fin found on the seafloor at 38 feet, and her still-running dive watch tied to the surface buoy with a neat square knot - who tied it, and why would anyone do that? Was it Marcia Webb herself, or someone else who reached her buoy?
In this episode, we recount the sequence of events from the moment Marcia Webb entered Pelican Narrows to the discovery of evidence on the buoy, laying out the physical details that force a single unresolved question: how did the watch come to be deliberately knotted to the tether?
Person: Marcia Webb
Date: January 9, 2019 at approximately 5:15 AM
Location: Pelican Narrows
Equipment: Suunto dive computer (approx. 3 years old)
Responding Officer: Lieutenant Owen Farris
- Water temperature recorded at 41 degrees Fahrenheit the morning Marcia dove.
- Buoy found roughly 400 meters from the nearest shore at about 6:45 AM.
- Line recovered from seafloor was 8-mm polypropylene with frayed pattern consistent with propeller shredding at 38 feet depth.
- Marcia’s planned depth in her logbook was 20 meters (66 feet), but gear and line were found at 38 feet (approx. 12 meters).
- Watch crystal cracked and bezel sheared off; the Suunto was still running and tied to the buoy tether with a neat square knot.
