This is The 1947 Drude Incident at Heilstätte Nord, Brandenburg-Silesian Border by Sascha Schmidt, a mythical creature horror story set in the fog-bound ruins of post-war Germany. In 1947, a structural engineer arrives at a remote sanatorium to assess a routine ventilation problem, only to discover that the building’s damp walls and salvaged bedding have been colonized by the Drude—a blind, decentralized parasitic organism that feeds on the chemistry of human sleep. The creature is not a ghost or a demon, but a biological reality that has evolved to exploit enclosed sleep chambers, and the two hundred displaced patients inside the sanatorium are its ideal hosts.

Recovered field notes and classified reports reveal a hidden archive of failed containment: the parasite sustains its victim’s failing diaphragm in a distorted equilibrium while feeding, meaning any attempt to rescue the host by pulling them away causes instant death. As a botched partial burn drives the adult organisms deeper into the wards and accelerates the infestation beyond medical control, the engineer and a compassionate doctor are forced to confront an impossible calculation. The eggs travel in dust, in hair, in straw, and if the building is evacuated, the species will spread into the refugee streams of a shattered continent. The only remaining option requires the doctor to use her voice—the one thing the patients still trust—to keep them calm and immobile while the demolition charges are armed.

Written by Sascha Schmidt, based on the lore of Beasts of the Ancient World, and narrated by the synthetic voice of Henry Atkinson.
