- A restraining order was issued by the Juzgado Contravencional de Violencia Doméstica de Carrillo by December 2021.
- Esteban was prohibited from approaching her, approaching her family, and from carrying any firearm.
- He struck María Fernanda ten times with a sharp kitchen implement, causing confirmed wounds to head and back.
- After the killing he drove 32 kilometers before being stopped at a police checkpoint in Lagunilla with the weapon in the truck bed.
