Reality Check My Life | Shadow Snack | E29: You Don't Have to Make Everyone Else Hold What Happened to You
The Difference Between Being Witnessed and Making Your Pain Someone Else's Assignment
Human beings need witnesses.
Sometimes we need someone to sit beside us and say: I see you. I believe you. That was awful. Of course it hurt.
But somewhere between being witnessed and being supported, something can quietly shift.
“This happened to me. Sit with me while I hold it” can become “This happened to me, so something is now required of you.”
Your agreement. Your reassurance. Your anger. Your accommodation. Your nervous system joining mine so I know my feelings are legitimate.
In this Shadow Snack, we're turning the flashlight toward the difference between sharing pain and transferring responsibility for it—without turning grief into a stopwatch or telling anyone to “get over it.”
Because some things never completely stop hurting.
Some experiences permanently change the landscape.
And sometimes the most honest conclusion really is: That was fucking awful. I wish it hadn't happened.
But something can belong to your story without requiring everyone around you to live inside the chapter.
So today's mirror isn't: Are you over it yet?
It's:
When you tell someone what happened to you, what are you asking them to do with it?
And for those of us who automatically grab everyone else's emotional luggage:
What are you still carrying because you confused witnessing someone's pain with becoming responsible for it?
Maybe reclamation isn't learning not to need anyone.
Maybe it's learning the difference between:
Come sit with me.
and
Carry this for me.
