Seth Godin says that in a retail shop or a restaurant, the ones that succeed give ninety five percent of their profit to the landlord, and the ones that fail give a hundred and two, and that is the only difference between them. He is right that occupancy cost is the hinge, and most owners have never once worked out which side of it they are on. What he skips is the part that matters if you are the one who signed the lease: ninety five and a hundred and two are not a story you tell afterwards, they are a number you can read this month. So the question is not whether you should quit. It is whether you know your number yet.

THE GIFT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT
Sunk costs keep us trapped, he says, because quitting means explaining to your former self why they paid that price. What you already spent is a gift from your former self, and like all gifts you do not have to accept it. That is the kindest framing of sunk cost I have heard, and a feeling does not survive contact with a Tuesday. Build the decision on the next twelve months only. The deposit, the equipment, the two years you already served, none of it appears, because none of it changes based on what you decide now. If the next twelve months only work when you count the money you already spent, they do not work.

A DIP OR A CUL DE SAC
He asks what it usually costs to get through a dip like this one, and whether there is evidence more money gets you to the other side. He is right that evidence decides it, and he skips which evidence. Pick the one number that would move first if this were going to work. Not revenue, revenue moves last. Quote to close rate, repeat orders, calls answered inside a day. Write the level and the date beside it. A dip has a leading number already moving while the cash still looks ugly. A cul de sac has a story about why the number will move later.

IF YOU CAN WRITE IT DOWN
He can write down the rules of bookkeeping, hire a different bookkeeper tomorrow, and the business does not fail, and that is what AI gets good at fast. For someone picking a career that is a warning. You are not picking a career. You own the place, and the same sentence is your exit plan. Everything that can be written down is a thing that no longer requires you, which is the definition of an asset. Write down what you do all day, on purpose, until the only thing left unwritten is judgment.

THE SMALLEST AUDIENCE
Media keeps telling you to be a Kardashian or be Sam Altman. You are supposed to make promises and keep them for the smallest audience, and that is enough. The smallest audience is a capacity decision, not a marketing one. Most of these businesses are not short of demand, they serve four kinds of customer at once and serve none of them properly. Quitting the four you were never going to win is how you free the resources to win the one.

Most people will not quit. It is not that they lack the courage. It is that nobody ever gave them a number.
