It’s been a very focused season for both of us. And in different ways, we’ve both found ourselves asking, “Am I doing this right?” and “I can’t show up the way I want to.” And when we’re in seasons like that, it can be really easy to create a narrative about someone else based on how their actions are seeming to us.

It’s harder to stop and ask, “I wonder what’s coming up for them right now?” Because it’s so easy to take things personally. But what if, instead of immediately making someone else’s behavior mean something about us, we got curious about what we’re actually needing in that moment?

    Do we just miss them?
    Are we feeling disconnected?
    Are we wanting reassurance?
Are we just worried about them and wanting to know that they’re okay?

There’s usually something underneath the story we’re telling ourselves. And like we always say, the goal isn’t to never have those feelings. It’s to get more familiar with what’s happening in our own bodies—to notice what comes up before we react, and get curious about what we might actually need. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do for ourselves, and for the people we love, is pause long enough to get curious instead of making it personal.

  • Episode 76: New Baby, New Business: Two Different Chapters, the Same Beautiful Mess

There's a moment that happens in almost every conversation between the two of us lately. One of us is talking about a business decision, a hiring choice, a launch, a number that isn't adding up the way we hoped and the other is talking about sleep schedules, nursing, or the strange new identity of being someone's mother. And somewhere in the middle of it, we stop and look at each other and say: wait, this is the same feeling.

We are in completely different chapters. One of us is building something from the ground up a business, a brand, a vision that used to live only in her head and now has to survive contact with the real world. The other is building a human being, and then raising that tiny human through the fog of the fourth trimester, trying to remember what a full night of sleep even felt like. On paper, these look like two unrelated stories. In practice, they rhyme in almost every way that matters.
