The rise of the "explainer video"—a short, animated video that explains a complex concept in simple visual terms—has made ideas from quantum physics to constitutional law accessible to general audiences worldwide.

Live streaming has opened additional dimensions of video's democratic potential. Citizen journalists covering protests, natural disasters, or government actions can broadcast in real time, bypassing traditional media filters. Activists in repressive regimes have used live streaming to create immediate, authenticated records of human rights violations. Musicians, artists, and teachers have built communities around live-streamed performances and lessons. The intimacy and immediacy of live video creates a different kind of connection than polished, edited productions.

Short-form video—pioneered by Vine, then transformed by TikTok—represents the most recent evolution. TikTok's algorithm, optimized for maximum engagement, has demonstrated the astonishing capacity of brief videos to educate, entertain, and organize political action at unprecedented speed. In the early 2020s, TikTok tutorials, political commentary, and cultural commentary reached hundreds of millions of users, making it one of the most significant multimedia platforms in history.
