Today's reading covers Judges 4 and Proverbs 14:13–16. The reflection follows Israel's fall back into oppression under Jabin, king of Canaan, and his commander Sisera, and the deliverance that comes through Deborah the prophetess, who summons Barak to battle, and Jael, who kills Sisera with a tent peg after he takes refuge in her tent. The discussion sits with the bittersweetness of deliverance alongside Israel's repeated backsliding, and traces the cycle of sin, oppression, and rescue that keeps replaying across the book.
In Proverbs 14:13–16, we cover how even laughter can carry an aching heart and joy can end in grief; the backslider who is filled with the fruit of his own ways, against the good man rewarded for his; and the contrast between the simple who believe everything and the prudent who weigh their steps. Proverbs 14:15 points us to the Bereans in Acts, to test every thought against Scripture rather than being reckless or careless like a fool.
