Today's reading covers Judges 1 and Proverbs 14:1–4, opening a new book in the Lamp and Light Bible reading plan. Our reflection lays out Judges as a whole — roughly 200 years of Israel's history split into spiritual disobedience, political destruction, and moral depravity. In chapter 1, Israel fails at driving out the surrounding nations God commanded them to remove, setting up the recurring cycle of disobedience and deliverance that defines the book.
In Proverbs 14:1–4, the discussion covers the wise woman who builds her house against the folly that tears it down, the contrast between walking in uprightness and living deviously, the fool whose own mouth brings trouble on himself against the wise whose words preserve them, and the reminder that an empty manger may look clean but it's the strength of the ox that brings in the harvest.
